Be careful what you open!!!

On 21st October, whilst I was at the Brightwells’ Cob Sales, at Builth, an email addressed to one of my clients popped up in my emails on my phone. From my phone I couldn’t tell why it arrived in my inbox, but when I returned to the office I discovered that the email address it was sent to was not quite correct, so had been forwarded to me as account administrator.

The email itself, initially appeared to be genuine and, as my client is a well respected business, I was surprised by the content. The email also had attached a Word document. I would imagine it was intended to make my client’s so enraged by the content that he would open the attachment without thinking.

At my office, in a controlled environment, I further investigated the email and the attachment. I discovered several things wrong with the content of the email itself, but the main problem was with the attachment, which contained an encrypted file. Had my client opened the attachment on a poorly protected computer, with possibly an earlier version of Word, his computer would almost certainly have been infected by an exploit contained in the word file.

I now have my client’s permission to show you the email (with his company name and address hidden) so that you can appreciate what I am talking about.

I cannot over emphasise that you should be careful opening attachments on any unexpected emails, particularly attachments that are Word documents or compressed files (.zip etc). You might also like to take a look at http://www.eqwebs.com/index.php/faq/9-internetsafety .

MICROSOFT does NOT cold call about computer faults!

I’ve just had a very interesting phone call from a gentleman with an India accent, though the accent isn’t important as it could have been from anyone. He stated that he was calling from Microsoft and that they were concerned about a number of network faults showing up on my computer. At this point I told him that I was not interested in his SCAM and put the phone down. I would urge anyone who receives a similar call to do the same.

If I had continued the call he would have almost certainly “persuaded” me that it was imperative that I download something so that he could look at my computer to clear the problem. Once he had access to my computer we would have been able to seek out personal information on the computer, install spyware etc. and cause all types of problems. As well as this I have heard that this type of scam frequently involves paying a fee (by card) to fix the “problems”.

Please be aware that Microsoft does not cold call anyone about faults on computers. Don’t fall for this SCAM.

Changes to publishing configuration

A recent automatic operating system update on all of our web servers has necessitated a change to the publishing configuration for any clients publishing their website with Expression Web.

Previously the Directory box was left empty – it should now contain ../../../web – please make this change and save the publishing configuration.

It has been noted that Microsoft FrontPage 2013 does not work with this directory configuration and we would advise all clients still using FrontPage to upgrade to ExpressionWeb. Other than being a different colour on screen, ExpressionWeb is very similar to FrontPage, especially if you customise it as directed in our tutorial.

Nominet Accredited Registrar Status

Eqwebs Ltd trading as Equestrian Websites was today awarded Accredited Registrar status by Nominet (the .uk domain name authority).  To date there are only 51 of over 4,700 Nominet Registrars who hold Accredited Status. This status is only awarded to those registrars who prove that they can meet the highest standards set by Nominet. This is an exceptional achievement for us as most Accredited Registrars are the “big” companies in the domain name industry.

Squirrel Mail not working

Squirrelmail webmail has not been working on our servers since an automated operating system update on the morning of 6th February. I have been following the problems caused by this update (not only squirrel mail) on a forum used by the authors of the update and have tried various fixes, to no avail. It seems that if and when there is a fix, webmail will only be accessible via the admin interface and not in the way you have been accessing it until now.

We have only ever recommended that you use webmail as a secondary method of accessing your emails and that your primary method should be to download your emails directly to your computer via an email program.

We already have a server dedicated to mail filtering (stopping spam, viruses etc.) and I am looking into the possibility of adding a further server to our server cluster to deal exclusively with email distribution. If we do go down this route, the new server would have a new webmail facility, but not Squirrelmail.

UPDATE 10/02/2014 6.40pm

I have now managed to get Squirrel Mail working via the admin interface on ns9.eqwebs.com (but unfortunately not on ns8.eqwebs.com). If your website is on ns9, login to your admin interface with your email username and password. Once in, click on the Personal Profile tab at the top of the screen and on the next screen click on the webmail tab near the top left of the screen

This is not an ideal solution but at least you will be able to use this method to access your emails until I can sort out a better solution.

I hope to be able to get ns8 working like this tomorrow and I will also be testing a new webmail solution.

Squirrel Mail is now working via the admin interface on all of our servers.

UPDATE 1/03/2014

We now have Roundcube Mail working on all our servers as a replacement for SquirrelMail. As we are NOT enabling this by default, if you want this enabled for your virtual server please contact us to request this.
